Introduction

This book has been written in direct response to the needs of students of Environmental Engineering at an upper intermediate and advanced level of English, who wish to improve their vocabulary in the subject matter of their university courses. Its primary goal is not to teach the subject, but to provide the students with the vocabulary which might be useful in their future studies and professional career.
The book offers a selection of lexical items tasks based on authentic materials. The materials have been carefully chosen and adapted from reliable scientific sources providing a solid starting point for language practice.
The book consists of two parts subdivided into seventeen units. The first part focuses on more general technical language, part two provides the students with more specialised vocabulary.
Each unit includes various activities aiming at introduction, comprehension, practice and consolidation of the technical vocabulary. Numerous tasks can be used selectively or adopted by the teacher to the needs of particular groups of students; furthermore, the book may be applied for self-study as the glossary of essential vocabulary items is included at the back of the book.
The authors hope that this book will be both stimulating and enjoyable for students, as well as for the teachers.
